ROCKLAND — The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA), 21 Winter St., announces application guidelines for its upcoming 2022 CMCA Artist Residency, presented in collaboration with the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation.
Submission guidelines are as follows.
Residency dates: This is a four to six month residency beginning Sept. 15, 2022 and ending no sooner than Jan. 15 and no later than March 15, 2023.
Who May Apply? The CMCA Artist Residency Program is open to artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, or alternately identified persons of color who live year-round in Maine. Preference will be given to artists who have experience presenting public art, exhibition(s) or project(s) that directly engage audiences.
CMCA is seeking proposals for the development of a public art offering/project to take place outside the walls of CMCA in Rockland. Examples of a public art offering include, but are not limited to: off-site exhibition, performance, lecture series, mural, workshop, etc.
The selected artist will have the support of CMCA staff in developing a successful residency and resulting public project. This support includes help with contracting for off-site space for your project.
Goal: The CMCA Artist Residency was developed to offer an artist the opportunity to devote significant time to furthering their practice in the development of a public project that will engage audiences beyond CMCA’s footprint.
Lodging, Studio Space, Residency Requirements: The residency offers dedicated housing (a one-bedroom apartment provided by Ellis-Beauregard Foundation located in the foundation’s administrative building) and a separate studio space in Rockland for a period of four months, between July 1 and Oct. 31. The artist is encouraged to live/work in Rockland throughout the four-month period, in part or for the full duration. We do ask for minimum in-town residency of 40 days spaced throughout the four-month period.
Honorarium: The selected artist will receive a monthly $1,200 honorarium, totaling $4,800 for the full four-month residency. The honorarium is intended to help cover costs of food, mileage, living expenses, etc.
Public Project Budget: The selected artist will have access to a budget of up to $5,000 to produce the proposed public art project in Rockland. Examples of eligible expenses include, art materials, space rental for your public offering, honoraria for collaborators, guest speakers, etc. The project budget will be developed by the artist in collaboration with the CMCA executive director, who will supervise the distribution of funds.
