Meet artist Maryrose Cobarrubias Mendoza and receive a free, signed copy of the latest Through the Eyes of Artists poster this Wednesday, August 3 from 7-9pm at a free summer concert in Temple City Park.
An imagined bookshelf containing mementos of Temple City is highlighted in Metro Art’s new poster for the Through the Eyes of Artists poster series that you can see aboard Metro buses.
The city’s many stories — past, present and future — are woven against a backdrop of rolling hills and palms. Viewers might peruse this calming depiction of Temple City by artist Maryrose Cobarrubias Mendoza for references and insight, as one might explore a favorite bookstore or friend’s shelf of treasures.
Books on the shelf represent indigenous communities of the area, the Woman’s Club, Temple City High School, the Camellia Festival, California architectural home design, gardening and future stories yet to be written. Objects depict the dome-shaped office of Temple City’s founder: a medal honoring the veteran community; a historic Red Car, and; a peony for the many Asian immigrants who make Temple City home.
The iconic Performing Arts Pavilion at Temple City Park — where concerts, tai chi and farmers’ markets bring people together — is also featured on the poster.

About the Artist
MARYROSE COBARRUBIAS MENDOZA (b. 1966, Manila, Philippines) uses craft, scale, perspective, and replication to recast the familiar in drawings, sculpture and installations. Her work centers on the exploration of identity, history and environment complicated by underrepresentation, marginalization, extraction and cultural amnesia, particularly among the diasporic.
Her work has been exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art, USC’s Pacific Asia Museum, Los Angeles’ Municipal Art Gallery, and others. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a COLA Individual Artist Fellowship, and the NY Art Matters Fellowship, and has served as artist-in-residence at Yaddo Artist Residency, Joshua Tree Highlands Residency, and Art Space Yosuga in Kyoto, Japan.

In the tradition of celebrating transportation through colorful travel destination posters, Metro Art commissions a diverse range of Los Angeles artists to create original artworks for the Through the Eyes of Artists poster series.
