A new café with an emphasis on supporting local artists is opening Thursday in downtown Springfield.
The Artist Cafe, located at 1365 Main St., is opening on Oct. 13. The cafe will offer coffee by Monsoon Roastery and will specialize in breakfast sandwiches and omelets for the morning crowd. Maynard points out that the café will use baked goods from Springfield vendors — such as Benson’s Bagels and pastries from Picky Diva Catering — and he emphasizes that all the work to get the shop up and running was done by Springfield contractors.

“It’s a real Springfield vibe,” David Maynard, owner of the café, said.
Emerging painters, artists, and photographers from the Springfield area will have an opportunity to showcase their work in galleries at the café, Maynard said. All proceeds of sold artwork will go toward artists.
Currently, a gallery called “Faces” by Springfield photographer and Navy veteran Robert Graves is on display on the walls of the café. It features up close, black-and-white portraits of people of various ages and backgrounds.

On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the café will stay open late for live music on the small stage at the back of the shop. The café will also host “paint and sips,” some mixology classes and there will be days with scheduled book readings.

On each of those nights, different catering vendors from Springfield will offer dinner options to customers, Maynard said. “It’s one spot with the taste of the entire Springfield.”

Maynard said he was born and raised in Springfield. He studied finance at Bentley University and currently works as the vice president senior portfolio manager at New Valley Bank. The Artist Café is his first business venture in food service operations.
The hours of operation will be Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; late night hours Thursday through Saturday will be from 5 p.m. to midnight.
“Grab a cup of coffee, a glass of wine and just enjoy the art,” said Maynard. “It’s really an artist-flavored café.”
