PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Art Center will introduce its new Artist-in-Residence, Margee Bias, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the art center at Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg.
Bias will be demonstrating and explaining her weaving process. The free public event will take place in the Reception Gallery of the Art Center.
“The opportunity to be an Artist in Residence at the Parkersburg Art Center is an honor,” said Bias. “I am excited to have this space to share the art of weaving with our community.”
Bias is a fiber artist from Parkersburg, who uses a floor loom to transform yarn into fabric which can be worn, used to adorn furniture, or displayed on a wall. She has been immersed in fiber arts in one way or another nearly all her life. Her inspiration for her creations is drawn from the colors and patterns of nature.
She has followed her interests in the fiber arts from apprenticing as a spinner of yarn at the West Virginia Arts and Crafts Festival, where she first became acquainted with weaving on a floor loom. Bias sought out teacher and basket maker Cindy Taylor who owned and wove on numerous floor looms. Bias also took art classes at West Virginia University at Parkersburg and joined The Pioneer Fiber Crafters, based in Campus Martius Museum of Marietta. From apprenticing to demonstrating, this adventure has taken her to fairs in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Bias has served on the board of directors with Appalachian by Design (ABD) based in Greenbrier County, W.Va., and has knitwear at the Tamarack Marketplace in Beckley. Her paintings and needlework are currently available in the PAC 713 Market, the Art Center’s gift shop.
“The floor loom on which she works is large and we are fortunate to have a space available where Margee can work and we can all enjoy watching this process,” said Jessie Siefert, Managing and Education Director at the Parkersburg Art Center. “We look forward to her involvement at the Art Center and will plan more opportunities for the public to watch and learn from this master craftsperson.”
