With inspiration pulled from her love of tarot cards, designer Kaley was able to merge the history of tarot with the history of the Miami HEAT. We sat down with Kaley to dive into the details of her awesome Court Culture collection.
Talk to us about the inspiration behind your collection.
I wanted to try and find a way to blend my design identity with the HEAT identity and I landed on the idea of being inspired by my hobbies. My hobby of reading tarot gave me the inspiration and idea to honor history in a new way. Tarot has a dense art history that has been molded over centuries, so I wanted to bring that concept with the HEAT and honor our history in a new way.
Woah, that’s amazing. Talk to us about how you got into Tarot card world.
I have been reading Tarot cards since 2019 and I love it. It's a cool medium that has been around for so long and I enjoy being able to read for my friends and myself. The experience is similar to talking to a best friend about your concerns or hopes for your present or future issues. I treat it in a very light matter, something fun and nothing too serious. I know there are a lot of people with negative opinions about them, but they truly are just a fun hobby. I'm not a doom and gloom fortune teller in the slightest.
That’s a cool hobby! How does this collection represent you as a designer?
This collection represents how far I have come as a designer to this point in time. My brand has gone through a load of revisions, but I finally feel like I'm in a comfortable and confident area in my design career to be able to create a collection that is just as much as me as it is HEAT.
Do you have a favorite element that you created for this series?
My handwritten "3x Champs" is my favorite element. It's on every piece I made. It's a small detail but I always told myself that I wanted to feature my handwriting on clothing one day, so the fact that it's on this collection is cool.
Outside of the “3x Champs,” are there any hidden details that you’d like to point out?
A cool hidden detail is on the Final Score tee. On the back, there are handwritten scores on the lower back and those are the actual final scores that won us our championships. I wanted to add that as an “IYKYK” kinda thing. I hope it's what die-heard fans will appreciate.
Speaking of die-hard fans, what does “HEAT Culture” mean to you?
HEAT Culture to me means being unapologetically proud of our work ethic, our history, and our way of doing things here at the HEAT. No matter how extreme we always support it all the way through. It's cutthroat but it’s the coolest culture in the league.
It really is. How cool is it for you to see a project that you’ve put so much work into come to life?
It is extremely surreal to see this project come to life. I didn't expect to be able to have my name and brand attached to the HEAT in this way so early on in my career. I am beyond grateful.
What’s something you hope people take away when they see your collection?
I hope people see how history can be honored while still looking super dope. I had the fans on my mind while making this collection because I truly hope it's something that they are proud to wear for years.
