Good Omens has been a much-loved novel and a highly praised TV series, and now it is going to be a record-breaking graphic novel as well. However, while on-screen appearances of the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s’ Nick Fury have inspired his subsequent comic book look, that is not something that will be happening with David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s iterations of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s characters.
Colleen Doran is the artist behind the new adaptation of Good Omens in graphic novel form, and the project has already been making waves on Kickstarter after setting a new record for being the fasted funded comic adaptation ever on the crowdfunding site. The popularity of the project saw it smashing through its £25,000 ($31,843) target in just ten minutes, and by the end of its funding window the total raised was just under £2.5 million ($3.1 million).
However, Doran revealed to CBR that she has not watched the popular TV adaptation of the novel since because she has no intention of trying to compete with the “amazing” production. She said:
“There is absolutely no way I can do anything with the graphic novel versions that competes with the amazing David Tennant and Michael Sheen. I'm not even trying. But when I knew I was getting this project, I immediately stopped watching the show to make sure I cleared as much of it from my head as possible and stuck to only what was written on the page. It was a task, let me say because I'd watched that show dozens of times. When I was feeling down, I just played it on a loop.”
Good Omens Continues Terry Pratchett’s Legacy.
When author Terry Pratchett passed away in 2015, one of his most prominent stipulations was that any unfinished novels and stories were destroyed. However, his legacy continues to live on through the release of previously unpublished writings that were completed before his death, and new adaptations of his work.
Good Omens has always been one of his most iconic pieces outside his Discworld series, and it became a unique beast thanks to the addition of Neil Gaiman’s voice. Although the novel had previously been turned into an audiobook, it was not until 2019, four years after Pratchett passed, that Good Omens was finally given the chance to shine on screen with the brilliant performances of David Tennant, Michael Sheen and an all-star supporting cast.
Although season 1 covered the story told by Pratchett and Gaiman’s novel, the pair had discussed where the story could go next. That has now played out in season 2 of the show, which made a triumphant return earlier this year. While there are potentially more seasons to come according to Gaiman, in the meantime fans can also look forward to what appears to be a completely new take on the story in the graphic novel, which will be released in July 2024.
