The arrival of May typically heralds a packed spring festival calendar in Baltimore. This year is no different, but we’ll have to continue to tune in from home. Check out AVAM’s Kinetic Sculpture Race in miniature, Flower Mart from Home and the Black Aritst Fair. Soon, we’ll all be together.
Black Artist Fair: April 30-May 2, virtual. The Black Arts District, centered along Pennsylvania Avenue, presents a weekend of free educational and interactive events to connect Black creatives in Baltimore. Highlights include a keynote talk from comedian and actress Amanda Seales, an ode to Baltimore Club music, and plenty of workshops, classes and conversations.
Flower Mart at Home: April 30-May 2, virtual. The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy’s festival of crafts, food, plants and performances is virtual this year. A series of events feature floral arrangement demos, educational events and wine and spirit tastings.
Indignant, Excited and Alarmed: Clara Barton and the Aftermath of the Pratt Street Riot: Noon on Friday, April 30, virtual. Fort McHenry presents a lecture from Jake Wynn of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. It explores the founder of the Red Cross, and her experience after a key Baltimore event in Civil War history.
Mondo Baltimore: 7 p.m. on Friday, April 30. The film screening series continues its virtual run with “The Diamond Arm.” It’s a 1967 film in which “an ordinary Soviet citizen accidentally intervenes into a huge operation of international criminal group that trades illegally obtained jewelry.”
Honey, I Shrunk the Kinetic Sculpture Race: 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, virtual. The American Visionary Art Museum’s annual citywide obstacle course of people-powered art is virtual this year. That means Baltimoreans are still contributing their creations and racing them over land, sea, mud and sand. But this year they are miniature model “Dream Machine” 3D artful sculptures.
Live Streaming Jazz Concerts: April 30-May 2. An Die Musik Live has a full weekend of streaming concerts. It starts Friday evening with an International Jazz Day performance from Charles Rahmat Woods Quartet. On Saturday, check out the Bill Heid Trio‘s monthly set at 3 p.m., followed by Reginald Cyntje’s Continuum at 7 p.m. On Sunday, pianist Benito Gonzalez pays triubte to McCoy Tyner for a 3 p.m. matinee, followed by an encore of Grasso-Ravita Jazz Ensemble‘s CD release at 7 p.m.
Rose in May: 12-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, at Harbor East. More than 15 shops will be open in Harbor East for a day of strolling, sipping and browsing. Check out live music, enjoy a giveaway, grab a macron from Sacré Sucré Pastry Studio or check out a pop-up floral shop.
5th Annual Baltimore Piano Marathon: 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, virtual. Franklin Presbyterian Church’s Spire Series hosts five local classical pianists, performing the work of Chopin, Huffman, Beethoven, Schubert and Scarlatti.
“Eclipse: Infinite Ending” Artist Talk: 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, virtual. Catalyst Contemporary hosts Baltimore-based painter and environmental scientist Se Jong leads a talk on her work.
Calidore Quartet: 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, virtual. The Shriver Hall Concert series presents a performance from the renowned chamber music group, featuring works by Dvořák, Schubert and a premiere of a quarter piece by Hannah Lash.
