Mel Rule was always into music, but didn’t take rap seriously at the start. It was something he felt just came naturally to him.

“It was just something we knew how to do,” he said. “We just knew how to rap.”

Growing up in Far Rockaway’s Redfern Houses, rapper Mel Rule said he and his friends used to hang out and record music at each other’s houses.

“That was the thing we were doing out here in Far Rockaway. Going to each other’s crib and recording music.”

Mel Rule eventually linked up with Trust Money Management CEO Lamar Jones, when a friend introduced them.

“He started coming down to work with me years ago,” Jones said. “We had a song called ‘Money to Get, Shows to Rock.’”

Now, in 2021, Mel Rule is currently working with Trust Money Management to release his new full-length album, Love Solo.

Mel Rule describes his sound as a “hardcore burst of joy.”

“That’s the reaction I get,” he said. “The way I write, I actually care about what you’re going to hear. I actually take my time and put my time into deciding what would be exciting at the time to say that in that bar.”

According to Mel Rule, it’s that burst of energy that has kept him interested in rap all these years.

“I noticed people silently had a need for what I was saying and what I was doing as far as rap. It just kept me intrigued and I just kept going,” Mel Rule said. “I always did love hip-hop. It’s weird when you discover you have something the world might like. It’s crazy.”

Before he linked up with Trust Money, who was busy working with other artists at the time, Mel Rule first branched out to work with an up-and-coming producer named Matlock.

Together they created a few songs and released two or three albums together including, Alcohol and the Lighter and A Buried Treasure.

“The main issue is that we never had any bread to go full-fledged with this because everybody got their rent, bills, and are taking care of their kids,” Mel Rule said. “We only really had a studio and we had ill talent but we didn’t have money to push it anywhere. We just kept going… we didn’t stop and we ain’t going to stop either.”

Mel Rule says that his upcoming album was created as a way to put love out into the universe.

“The climate is real high. A lot of people were dying,” Mel Rule said. “I always had a love to give everybody. My way to do it was to rap and speak it that way… There’s so much bitterness. So much terrible stuff going on. We basically want to put out a good vibe for people to look forward to instead.”

His upcoming album, Love Solo, will release on June 1, 2021 with production by Jones.

“There is one album coming, but we got three more in the mix,” Jones added. “The second album, Cyborg Life, is going to be the biggest album ever.”
