Musician Julian Sherwood.
Musician Julian Sherwood.

Julian Sherwood is a 24-year-old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has been working professionally for over a decade. After a long time of drumming for various bands, Julian has spent the past couple of years focusing on his solo career as well as hired studio work for local artists.

Julian’s solo projects are a testament to his years of honing his craft. His first full-length album, “Sorrow is a Virtue”, is characterized by introspective lyricism and wistful vocals poignant enough to not be overshadowed by the driving indie rock instrumentation. It is technically impressive without lacking the sense of intuitive expression that is the mark of a great artist.

In this interview, Julian about his musical development and accomplishments to the Winsted Phoenix.

Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Southington, and for the past couple of years, I’ve been at my apartment in Bristol.

I see from your website bio that you’ve been making music since the age of 10. Tell us a bit about how you’ve progressed as an artist over the years.
I grew up in a very musical household with my dad being a touring musician and guitar instructor. When I was 10, he was teaching my older brother guitar, and he had a drummer friend of his start teaching me drums, which allowed my brother and me to start a few “bands”, one of which became an actual serious project- called Hard Water. By age 14/15 we had released 3 albums and had been performing very regularly! Then for a few years, I was a drummer in a handful of bands- The Alternates Duo, The Merks, Pale Space, but I was beginning to teach myself guitar and fall in love with songwriting. By the time I graduated college, I left the project I was in to focus on my solo music and hired studio work, which has kept me busy ever since! I continue to see myself improving day by day, and I’m genuinely excited about the content I get to be a part of and create!

How would you describe your music?
My solo music is Indie to me, with some rock, funk, jazz, and psychedelic elements. Whatever it is, I just hope it elicits some feelings/vibes from my listeners 🙂

Who/what are your biggest influences?
I can never think of anything when people ask me this lol. So, I typed this list out one time, and I’d say it’s a nice lil’ collection of stuff that jazzes me up. In no particular order:

Alex Turner, Snow Patrol, Secret Machines, The Beatles, Elliot Smith, Cage The Elephant, Hippocampus, Mac Demarco, Chet Baker, Death Cab For Cutie, Frank Ocean, The Strokes, The Vaccines, Givers, Amy Winehouse, Band of Skulls, Snooks Eaglin, Ok Go, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Beach Boys, Culture Abuse, Led Zeppelin

Can you tell us about your songwriting process?

No.

Just kidding! It’s mostly vibing out to chords/sounds/feelings on an acoustic, piano, or electric… recording myself vibin’ out… and then later finding my favorite “vibe-outs” and putting some words and vocal melodies to it. I’ve always had a “sounds first, poetry second” workflow more often than not.

What have been your favorite moments in your career?

One time I did a battle of the Bands at Mohegan Sun and had the privilege of performing on the Wolf Den stage! That was rad. Other than that, my favorite moments are always when I’ve just released music. It’s always such a relief that the work is done, and I just get to enjoy the product and show it to my friends.

Live performance has been a big part of your life. How has the pandemic (and the subsequent lack of shows) affected you artistically?

Although there haven’t been live shows, I’ve been very busy tracking in-studio for my clients, doing some filmed live-in-studio performances, and of course, writing my new music! Not to mention, I’ve probably been to more jams in the past year than I have my whole life lol. All of these are extremely enjoyable, productive, and fulfilling things for me, so I really can’t bring myself to complain!

Are you working on any projects right now?

Right now, I am doing in-studio work for multiple local artists including:

– Joey Wit & The Definition
– Scott Wilton
– SAMITH
– Outsourced Feelings

And a few of my finished client projects are pending release shortly!
– UNRANSE
– Jenna Thompson
– Mike Sundberg
– Anthony Amato

As for my music, I anticipate releasing my solo album #2 in 2023!

What is in the future for you?

Lots of smiles, laughs, creative expressions, hard work, and love!

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

Whoever you are reading this, I make music for you, because I have a love for you.
