Artist Remarques: Lindsey Greyling - Beckett Media, LLC

tapanggane.blogspot.com

Lindsey Greyling is more than just a talented artist living in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. She’s been a bass player in a band, has an obsession with drinking cups of tea, and volunteers as a kid’s art tutor in her spare time. Lindsey is also a dedicated mom, whose son won an open exhibition at a gallery as a four-year-old. Art obviously runs in their family.

Non-Sport Update: How did you get started in your art career?

Lindsey Greyling: I sold sketch cards online back when I had a day job but it wasn’t a serious effort. After my son was born, I returned to college and graduated from Doncaster College with a first class honours degree in Illustration and concept art. I set up a portrait business, and after a few years I emailed Topps with my portfolio. They sent me an invite and from there I applied to more companies and have been working in sketch cards ever since.

NSU: What was the first set you worked on?

LG: Topps Empire Strikes Back Black and White in 2019. I was over the moon that it was my first set as it is my favorite Star Wars film. This set took me six weeks to complete, but my skills and speed have improved so much over the last few years that I can now usually complete a full colour set in a week.

NSU: You draw in multiple styles, such as realism for Star Wars and “cute” for Perna Studios. Which do you prefer?

LG: It entirely depends upon my mood at the time. I’ve always been a jack-of-all-trades. One of the reasons I love sketch cards is that I can experiment with different styles and materials. Realism helps my drawing and rendering skills. My stylized work, like my Peepers series, is an amalgamation of all that I’ve learned in the last few years and comes fairly naturally now. Sometimes I’m in the mood to create an illustrative card, other times I just want to copy a photograph.

NSU: You have drawn for big licenses and also for small press releases. What’s the difference from the Artist’s perspective?

LG: As an artist I find that the small releases give better pay, communication, longer deadlines and more artistic freedom. The larger licenses can help to put you in front of a larger audience and your artist returns can sell for quite a high price, but I’m finding my illustrative work is gaining just as much of a following and customer base as the licensed work I do.

NSU: When a license releases multiple sets, like Star Wars, how do you keep things fresh and exciting?

LG: I like to set myself a challenge on the multiple release sets. Sometimes it’s with the expressions of the characters, so an “angry” or “happy” set. I also change my materials such as switching from pen and pencil to watercolour, or instead of full colour, experimenting with black and white/colour mixes. My next challenge is going to focus on unusual lighting as that’s something I want to improve on.

NSU: Do you have a dream property, or favorite “universe” that you wish to draw sketch cards for?

LG: I do! And this is a terribly sad story. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has always been my favorite property. Topps released an Art of TMNT set, but I had only done one set for them at the time and didn’t receive an invite. A few sets later I started getting invited to every Topps set. It’s been my biggest disappointment since starting work in the industry.

NSU: Are you a full-time artist?

LG: Yes, I work as a full-time artist. Luckily, my personal sketch cards sell well. I still draw the odd larger piece if requested as it’s nice to be able to fit extra detail in but I’ll always prefer cards. I’m hoping to get out to attend comic cons next year. In between the usual household duties and working, I also love music and have been practicing the drums the past few years.

NSU: What’s next? Are there any upcoming projects you’re allowed to share?

LG: I’ve decided to set up a card publishing company; I’m going to be starting small and see where it takes me. I will still be working on sets but not the amount I have over the past few years. I feel I’ve put the hard work in and it’s time to see what’s next!

NSU: How can people contact or follow you?

LG: People can find me through my Facebook page, Cartoon Cosplay. I will also be setting up a website for my new venture but up until now I haven’t needed one. I love my work; honestly couldn’t be happier! Long live sketch cards!
