This is Robin Koffler's favorite time of year, soaking up the colors of a blooming Central Park. In particular she awaits the arrival of the cherry blossoms along the reservoir Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

“I love the pink trees, I'm a sucker for color,” said Koffler.

That love of color is displayed in the Upper West Side Resident's paintings. The graphic designer and jewelry maker started spending more time painting over the past eight years, and you will often find her in Central or Riverside Park taking photos with her iPhone, the beginning of her creative process.

What You Need To Know

  • Robin Koffler is an artist who paints from photos taken in city parks, including Central Park and Riverside Park

  • Koffler is a graphic designer and jewelry creator

  • Koffler’s mother is a sculptor and both her grandmother and great-grandmother were also artists

  • Koffler lives on the Upper West Side but was raised in Englewood, New Jersey

"What I do is, I work from an iPhone very far away and I don't wear my glasses to paint so I can really abstract it,” said Koffler who added “It's all about seeing the shapes, the light and the color."

Koffler, who grew up in New Jersey but went to school in Riverdale, also likes painting the reflections of buildings off the reservoir and lake in Central Park. This spotlights not only natural beauty, but the city's architectural gems.

"If I come and I take a good photograph of something, I think about it for days, I really think about it a lot,” said Koffler.

Koffler comes from an artistic family. Her mother is a sculptor, her grandmother and great-grandmother were also artists. Her father is a dentist, but he taught her to work in wax which came in handy for her jewelry making.

"They are all very involved with my art work, my entire family,” said Koffler who joked that “Everyone is an Art Director.”

You might say Koffler is always creating and is not happy when she is not. Painting she takes her to another place, and provides her with a challenge.

"It's like a puzzle, you are putting it together, and then sometimes it's not working, and it's making it work, I try and not to get too fussy with it, I try and keep it really loose and light,” said Koffler.

So if you see Koffler somewhere in the park, taking a photo, there's a good chance there is a painting on the way.
