ONEKAMA — Thirteen Onekama Consolidated Schools students from grades five through nine have been working with local artist and art educator Bill Hattendorf to create a garden mural.
The project, spearheaded by the Portage Lake Garden Club, Inc., features a garden scene, signage and logo commemorating the 150th anniversary of the historic “cut” from Portage Lake to Lake Michigan painted on the eastern exterior wall of the Farr Center, located at 5238 Main St. in Onekama.
Funding was provided by the Manistee County Community Foundation through a grant from the Limitless Fund, and Skip and Betsy Bergquist helped underwrite the costs. Hattendorf is creating the design, with the assistance of elementary, middle and high school students from Onekama Consolidated Schools.
“This is a wonderful collaboration," said Bonnie Garbrecht, volunteer project manager of the garden club.
The Portage Lake Garden Club was founded in 1935 and includes civic beautification as an important part of its mission. The group hopes art work underway will enhance Main Street and draw attention to the Farr Center Gardens surrounding the building, which are planted and maintained by club members throughout the year.
