A Philadelphia artist wants to paint a mural of Jim Boeheim and prominent members of the Syracuse University basketball team in downtown Syracuse.
Chris B. Murray designed the detailed mural idea, which prominently features Boeheim’s grinning face, along with his wife Juli and several past players, including Carmelo Anthony, Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, Gerry McNamara and Hakim Warrick. It also features Otto the Orange and the redesigned JMA Wireless Dome.
“I’ve been sitting on this idea for months,” said Murray, in a phone call with syracuse.com. “I finally drew up the sketch on Friday. I did a color comp on Sunday. And now I’m talking to you on Tuesday. This is still the rough version, but I might even add more players in there.”
Right now, the mural is just an idea. The design is the first draft of what Murray plans to present to the Syracuse Public Art Commission. His next steps are to apply for city approval, get permission from a local building, and acquire funding for the mural.
Murray, originally from Potsdam, N.Y., has worked for several Philadelphia sports teams since he moved there in 2008. The Philadelphia 76ers is one of his clients. But he’s been a lifelong fan of the Syracuse Orange, and always wanted to create a piece to honor Jim Boeheim.
“I’ve done a lot of stuff with Philly sports, but my heart still belongs to Syracuse basketball,” he said. “Jim Boeheim, Jimmy B, I mean, he’s at the helm of it all. I gotta get after this, to honor him. I know there’s not a Boeheim mural up there yet. In my eyes, this should have been done long ago.”
Murray has never met Boeheim, but he attended Syracuse basketball camps as a kid.
He remembers watching Syracuse win the national championship in his RIT dorm room when he was a college freshman.
“This is something that’s very important to me.”
Murray designed the mural to be painted on the east-facing side of the Bank of America Financial Center at 1 South Clinton St., as an idea for the city and company to consider.
“I know [the bank] might not be a possibility,” he said. “If there’s another wall, I’d be open to designing it. But to me, that Bank of America wall is just prime real estate in the city where everybody can see it. That location would be perfect.”
No mural yet exists of Jim Boeheim in Syracuse. Last October, artist Jonas Never painted a six-story mural downtown mural featuring four trailblazers of Syracuse basketball fame and activism. Never’s mural paid tribute to Dolph Schayes, Breanna Stewart, Earl Lloyd Jr., and Manny Breland.
