Even if you don’t watch awards shows, you’ve heard the question “Who are you wearing?” And you can probably guess the answers: Versace, Gucci, Prada … But at this year’s Oscars, an Oneida Nation artist and University of Wisconsin–Madison graduate’s name was added to the list: Paige Morningstar Skenandore, whose Indian name roughly translates to “she extends out a flower.”
Since graduating from UW–Madison in 2022, Skenandore has been working full-time on her business, Moody NDN (a phonetic abbreviation for “Indian”), an indigenous artist collective based in Oneida and Madison. Skenandore specializes in the traditional Indigenous practices of porcupine quillwork and beadwork.
