Clinton abstract artist and creative placemaker Gabriella Torres is featured on a new episode of “Iowa Life,” to be broadcast on Iowa PBS tonight (April 2) at 6:30 p.m.

The 28-minute episode also features breakdancing from DSM Breakerz, and three Tjernagel siblings recalling the day in 1968 when an airplane crashed into their Story City farmhouse. The episode is number 112 in the series on Iowans from throughout the state.

The segment (nearly 10 minutes on Torres, produced by Emily Kestel) was filmed in Clinton mainly in spring 2023, with a good chunk at the opening reception of Torres’s “Wildness” exhibit at the Mississippi River Eco Tourism Center in Camanche on March 2, 2024. Torres said she was surprised to be chosen as a subject.

“I was obviously honored and happy,” she said Tuesday. “I was definitely surprised and a little bit like, oh, you wanna do the feature on me? So, mostly surprised. But then working with Emily, who was the producer, she’s amazing. So it was really fun.”

In the profile of the artist, Torres says her purpose is to “use art as a way to create change and to make a positive impact on where I live, and my community and the people who share this awesome place with me.”

Torres used all natural materials and pigments to create her 70 abstract “Wildness” pieces on silk panels.

“If you make something interesting and beautiful, or just creative and unique, people will come to visit it,” she says in the episode. “I just really hope that other people can feel inspired and feel empowered to do things and to just take those risks. This story can be anybody’s story, it really can.”

Torres, 45, says there’s really nothing special about her or what she does.

“Anyone can do it and I just hope more people will, because our towns are worth saving, our towns are worth fighting for, our towns are worth investing and there’s so much opportunity in places like this,” she says in the video, which will be rebroadcast on Iowa PBS this Sunday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m.

On March 1, 2023, Torres was honored by the Iowa Arts Council at the Governor’s Arts Awards program as an emerging arts leader in Iowa.

She’s preparing for her third season of new art (by a second guest artist) at The Grove in Clinton’s Pocket Park, 125 4th Avenue South, and the second year of the Paint It Back Street Art Festival in August.

Co-created by Gabi Torres and Chris Shannon, Paint it Back is an event that celebrates the transformative power of public art, and will gather nine artists to paint new murals on the Toyota Building at the intersection of McKinley Street and Main Avenue, Aug. 17-24, 2024.

Torres will actually miss seeing the “Iowa Life” premiere, since she had an artist talk with Jessica Steines (Clinton County Conservation naturalist) scheduled tonight at 6 p.m. at the Eco Tourism Center, the last night of the “Wildness” exhibit. The pieces will be placed at selected outdoor parks in the area, yet to be determined.
