PARKER, S.D. (KELO) — Even though it’s now April, in terms of basketball it’s still considered March Madness.
Parker High School is celebrating its own state championship tonight; not in basketball though. This team doesn’t draw up x’s and o’s, they just draw.
Her name is Olivia Anderson, but you could call this 16-year-old the MVP of the State A Tournament.
“She’s like that all-state athlete for state visual arts, she went three for three; three first places and she got best in show, you can’t get any better, I don’t know if anyone has ever done that before,” Parker Art Teacher Dave Fuller said.
These are Anderson’s three first-place finishes at state.
She drew this stunning portrait of Morgan Freeman with colored pencils.
She also drew a picture of an older gentleman with a lead pencil.
Then she won first place with an oil painting of a young woman.
“I do a lot of older people and I wanted to do someone who wasn’t so wrinkled, so I wanted to do someone young and expressed innocence and I thought I did a decent job with her,” Anderson said.
This is the state championship trophy, but even more impressive is that Parker has won the state title in six of the last seven years.
Anderson has played a big role in those titles. Surprisingly she says she never had much of an interest in art until she took a class with art teacher Dave Fuller.
“Not really, it wasn’t until I brought a picture, like in 8th grade, and he kind of helped me with that is when I started doing anything,” Anderson said.
She says Fuller was helpful in fine-tuning her talent.
“A lot of it was with technique stuff, I feel like I could figure out what I was doing on my own, but just the techniques he really helped me figure out what to do,” Anderson said.
Now, a few years later, Fuller can’t say enough about Anderson’s artistic talent.
“She’s just like a natural, I feel like I haven’t taught her that much,” Fuller said.
Anderson says she hasn’t decided what she wants to do yet after high school, but probably won’t pursue art as a career, rather keep it as a hobby.
