A new series, “PBS Arts Talk,” debuting Friday will feature artists and cultural icons discussing their craft and careers, sharing personal memories and stories behind their work.

In one episode, four-time Grammy-winning musician Seal speaks with Emmy-winning actor Henry Winkler about the former’s musical inspiration, upbringing and how he approaches songwriting.

Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens and Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell discuss theater, music and the emotional power of music. Mitchell also discusses the impact of the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown on the theater community and how it has been a catalyst for change for Black artists.

Award-winning journalist Ann Curry interviews New York State Writers Hall of Fame inductee and bestselling author Min Jin Lee about her novel, Pachinko; what inspired her research process; her close relationship with religion; and efforts to fight Asian hate.

Acclaimed ballerina Misty Copeland and two-time National Arts Club Prize winner, painter Nathaniel Mary Quinn, discuss the familial meaning of Quinn’s art; his drawing on the walls of his mother’s home on the South Side of Chicago; his MFA studies at New York University; and his current celebrity as an international artist. The two speak “on the value of therapy, (Quinn’s) drive to continue his education and the pressures of being a Black artist,” PBS said.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Award-winning musician Elvis Costello and Giddens explore the power of collaboration, looking back at Costello’s work with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney. “Using performance and interview footage of Costello, Bacharach and McCartney, (they) explore how Costello sees poetry as different from songwriting, and why he values musical surprises,” PBS said. The episode also features an improvised performance with Giddens playing the banjo and Costello the guitar.

Winkler interviews late-night TV host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who discusses his teenage years in radio and shares more recent professional anecdotes. The two also “discuss the art of interviewing, Kimmel’s family and reminisce about significant moments from both of their careers,” PBS said.

National Medal of the Arts honoree and dance and choreography icon Twyla Tharp discusses her career and creative process with Copeland. Starting with how Tharp begins each day, “the two break down some of (her) most famous pieces, including 1971’s ‘Eight Jelly Rolls’ and ‘Deuce Coupe’ from 1973. Touching on specifics like choreographing for a pointe shoe versus a sneaker, both Copeland and Tharp share their experience learning different dance styles and the impact of music on dance, including the work of Frank Sinatra,” PBS said.

"We're excited to further our commitment to the arts with PBS Arts Talk,” said Neal Shapiro, CEO of the WNET Group, which produced the series. "We hope viewers will be uplifted and inspired by the in-depth, extended conversations with those who have made contributions to our cultural landscape."

The series currently streams on pbs.org and the PBS app and will premiere on PBS stations on Friday, September 1.
