COLUMBIA – Orr Street Studios hosted its second annual Business Expo and Fashion Show on Sunday to spotlight local artists of color.
There were 18 participants in “The Color Black” expo and fashion show, including artists, designers and businesses to celebrate Black History Month.
The studio said last year the event was so packed that it became standing-room only.
T’Keyah Thomas, a Columbia jewelry artist, participated last year but is even more involved this year.
“This is my very first time setting up shop to sell some of my stuff, but this is my second fashion show,” Thomas said.
She also said the show is a great opportunity to celebrate the community.
“It means everything," she said. "I’ve been living here in Columbia since 2010, and I feel like it’s really been in the last handful of years that I’ve really seen the Black community here — just to come back out, just to pop out for these cultural events.”
Dawn Warren, the executive director of Orr Street Studios, said events like this are a way to celebrate local artists of color.
“Recognizing that if we are capable of doing more to help lift up these voices that are often unheard or underserved, why not do it,” Warren said.
Warren also said how amazing it is to support local artists in the Columbia community.
“Supporting a local artist makes a difference to that person's life and maybe, eventually, make a difference to you,” she said. “It is about the community coming together.”
