PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Arizona is mourning the loss of Phoenix artist Ed Mell, who passed away at the age of 81 this week after a long struggle with cancer.
From paintings to sculptures, his artwork is recognized worldwide. Beyond his artistic skills, Mell was kind and loved by many, and his family and friends say his legacy will last a lifetime.
“There’s a lot to be said about Ed,” said Mell’s friend, Ken Richardson. “I mean, he’s just a really down-to-earth guy and he will be missed.”
From his picturesque and colorful desert landscapes to beautiful bronze sculptures, Mell made waves in the world of modern art and realism. Much of his artwork can be spotted around the Valley, including a large sculpture called “Jack Knife” in Old Town Scottsdale.

During his 50 years as an artist, Mell created more than 4,500 sculptures and paintings. He didn’t just leave his mark through his creations; he also inspired the next generation of artists. While friends and family celebrate his life, they also want people to remember his dedication to his art and the people in his life.
The community is invited to honor Mell starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, in front of the “Jack Knife” sculpture at Main Street and Marshall Way. Visitors can bring flowers or anything else they choose to commemorate Mell’s life.
His artwork can also continue to be viewed at the Phoenix Art Museum or the Ed Mell Gallery.
