An Alabama rapper is about to get a coveted showcase on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” concert series.
June is Black Music Month, and the NPR program will celebrate that with a lineup of Black female artists. In a segment on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” “Tiny Desk” producer and host Bobby Carter described a roster that includes Mobile rapper Flo Milli.
Carter told Essence.com that the theme for the month was “giving female musicians their flowers.” He said the idea had been brewing since last June’s male-heavy lineup.
Milli, who’s from Mobile, has been getting national attention for several years. In a 2023 profile, Rolling Stone described her as “one of the most fun rappers alive” and said her forthcoming album, “Fine Ho, Stay” featured her “rhyming with the candy-colored zeal of a ‘Clueless’ character.” In a review of the album published this spring, Rolling Stone went on to say that she was “building a growing fanbase by delivering cut-throat lyrics while maintaining a graceful and fashionable persona.”
Others appearing in June include Tems, Chaka Khan, Tierra Whack, Kierra Sheard, Lakecia Benjamin, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Brittney Spencer and SWV.
“So we got young Kierra Sheard, who represents the gospel sector,” Carter said on “All Things Considered.” In the hip-hop area, we have Flo Milli and Tierra Whack, who both provide something very unique and fresh to hip-hop right now - speaking of fresh, Brittany Spencer, who’s bringing something so special to country music right now.”

“Looking at where the Tiny Desk platform is right now, I think it’s only right to really take that big spotlight, and honor them in a way where it’s all about the music and their contributions to music,” Carter told Essence.com, singling out Chaka Khan and SWV as well-known acts who deserved even more praise. “But also with a Flo Milli or a Tierra Whack which are women who are up and coming in and making their own stamp in music as well.”
Tems was featured in an episode released Monday. NPR’s announcement of the June theme did not include release dates for the June artists’ segments.
