Proud grandmother Teresa Susko of Cedar Lake hadn’t been to the Bachman Gallery at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts since pre-pandemic, to stroll any of the exhibits presented by South Shore Arts.

Susko said it’s her granddaughter, and the “student artist masterpieces” of her granddaughter’s peers, which prompted her to return to what she describes as “an immersion into art.”

“My granddaughter Reily Susko is a senior at Lowell High School and she did a graphic pencil sketch of objects which is on display,” Susko said.

“I don’t know why it has taken me so long to get back to these galleries for a visit. Now I’m inspired. I see South Shore Arts even does art classes here at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts. I’m thinking of signing up with Reily to do an art class together.”

The art of Reily Susko and her Lowell classmates is just one of the floor-to-ceiling gallery sections per school of student artwork in the Bachman Gallery for the 49th Annual Junior/Senior High School Exhibition hosted by South Shore Arts.

Brandon Johnson, South Shore Arts gallery coordinator, said with nearly 1,000 pieces on display, this year’s exhibit is nearly double last year’s post-pandemic in-person return for the annual student exhibit.

Now through May 14, the free student exhibit at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster includes junior and senior high schools from Lake, Porter and La Porte counties in Indiana and schools in south suburban Cook County in Illinois, all annually invited to submit artwork for the juried exhibition, which features original artwork created by students in grades six through 12 from public, private, and parochial schools.

This year, 23 high schools and six middle schools participated.

Prizes totaling more than $8,000 will be awarded this year, including the coveted annual Donald H. Berwanger Scholarship Award for $2,000, given to a graduating high school senior to attend an accredited college or university to study fine art, all presented at 1 p.m. May 7 during an awards ceremony in the gallery.

High Schools featured in the exhibit this year are Bishop Noll Institute, Bloom High School, Bloom Trail High School, Calumet New Tech High School, Chesterton High School, Crown Point High School, Griffith High School, Hammond Central High School, Hanover Central High School, Hebron High School, Highland High School, Homewood Flossmoor High School, Kouts High School, Lake Central High School, Lowell High School, Merrillville High School, Michigan City High School, Morgan Township High School, Morton High School, Munster High School, Thornton Fractional North High School, Thornton Fractional South, High School and Thornwood High School.

Participating middle schools include Charles N. Scott Middle School, Chesterton Middle School, Colonel John Wheeler Middle School, Griffith Middle School, Robert A. Taft Middle School and Wilbur Wright Middle School.

This year’s exhibit of original pieces, some for sale, include artistic mediums ranging from charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, oil, pastels, pencil and pen drawings to yarn, clay, sculpture, molded wire, paper, fiber, photography, mobiles, digital and even soap carving.

This year’s juror, the selection judge for awarding ribbons to distinguish top achievers is Emily Casella, a multimedia artist and educator from Northwest Indiana. She received her MFA in ceramics from Herron School of Art+Design and her BFA from Indiana University Northwest. Casella has worked as both a professional artist and educator for multiple universities and art centers.

Some of the key sponsors and donors for this year’s exhibit include BMO Harris, artist Barbara M. Meeker, Indiana University Northwest and Dyer Construction.

“With so many artwork pieces displayed this year, it’s pretty incredible when you walk in and the gallery is so filled with so much variation,” said Johnson, who is in his second year managing the event.

“The eye almost doesn’t know what to look at first, because there’s so much to see. There’s definitely the chance that something will get missed, which is why patrons should come and see this free exhibit more than once.”
