The Register is proud to announce the 2023 semifinalists for Artist of the Year. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this program which was developed as a companion to the annual Athlete of the Year honors.
For each discipline — theater, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, film and TV, fine arts and media arts — 107 semifinalists were chosen by a panel of arts teachers from among 721 nominees based on applications, performance videos, art portfolios, film samples, and artistic résumés.
The seven disciplines are further divided into specialties. For instance, in the specialty of theater, a student would be nominated in one of the following specialties: acting, musical theater performance, or theatrical design.
During the final round of adjudication, students are interviewed by a panel of distinguished artistic professionals and faculty members from Southern California universities. Interviews include a live presentation by the students followed by a question-and answer-session.
Of the 107 semifinalists, 29 finalists will be identified, one representing each specialty. (A maximum of 30 specialties are eligible, however this year, film and TV students in the specialties of promo/commercial making and TV/broadcast journalism were combined for the semifinal rounds because only a few students in each of these specialties were nominated.) In addition, one student from each discipline, seven in total, will be named as a 2023 Artist of the Year — the top honor for this program.
The finalists and Artists of the Year will be announced next Sunday, April 30.
On Wednesday, May 10, an awards ceremony will be held at Memorial Hall on the campus of Chapman University which is free and open to the public. This event will include performances and presentations by the top students.
