Creating meaningful art and combating systemic racism is what drives one local artist to create and fight.

Kaycee Colburn — a native of Jamestown as well as a published author, podcast host and resident artist at Jamestown Community College — is on a mission of honoring her Native American heritage and eroding the scourge of racism.

Using her artwork as a universal medium, she’s attempting to bridge the gap of cultural understanding, acceptance and the erasure of those who are struggling with an identity crisis by learning, honoring and presenting Native American artwork and culture in an educational setting. The Creatives Rebuild New York artist started her residency at JCC in 2022 and will finish in the spring of 2024.

“I’ve tried to fuse together art, dance, music and food to bridge the gap and fight back against Native American racism, stereotypes and cultural understanding,” Colburn said.

According to its website, Creatives Rebuild New York was announced in spring 2021 amid a national movement of broad-based employment programs that put artists back to work.

“I’m too white to be accepted by the Native American culture and too dark to be considered fully white,” she said. “It’s like being caught between two worlds. So, I use my art to try and bridge these two cultures and create a fusion of acceptance.”

Colburn, who has been an artist her entire life, draws on her family’s artistic roots as inspiration for some of her many projects and as a way of keeping her heritage alive and thriving.

“My mother and father were both creative people,” Colburn said. “My father was always making things out of wood and my mother was into beadwork and making dolls. Being able to express myself in my art wasn’t just encouraged, it was reinforced. I grew up in a large family. There were eight children in our family.”

However, as her time as an artist in residency comes to an end, she has some lofty goals, which she’s actively taking steps to ensure they become a reality.

“I’m opening an art and cultural center in town called KAYCO,” she said. “Continuing to fuse education and creative expression- to bridge cultural gaps and providing a safe place to ask questions and learn.”
